The One Big Beautiful Bill increased the Child Tax Credit to $2,200 per qualifying child for 2025 tax returns. However, new Social Security Number requirements may affect mixed-status families.
The Child Tax Credit (CTC) has been increased to $2,200 per qualifying child for the 2025 tax year under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. The refundable portion remains at up to $1,700 per child. Going forward, the full CTC amount will be indexed to inflation.
Important new requirement for immigrant families: Under the new law, both the parent (and spouse, if filing jointly) AND the qualifying child must have a valid Social Security Number to claim the CTC. This change may affect some immigrant and mixed-status families who were previously able to claim the credit.
Who still qualifies: Families where both parents and children have Social Security Numbers will benefit from the increased credit. If you have an ITIN but your children have SSNs, you may not qualify for the CTC but could qualify for the Credit for Other Dependents (worth up to $500 per dependent).
